Zoo Lights, 2014 December, 2014 – A 3D and 2D blended animated short created for the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens “Zoo Lights 2014” holiday event. The 3D animation was modeled, textured and animated using Maya 2015. The 2D animation sequences were completed in Toon Boom Harmony, with sound design and audio editing completed in Adobe Audition CC. My responsibilities for this short included modeling, texturing and animating the 3D advent calendar; all aspects of the “Getting Ready!” 2D sequence; and sound design & post production.

PAPER PALS – Between April 4th-6th 2013, Dripsblack Studios hosted the Citrus Cel Animation Festival (the only one of it’s kind in Florida) at the Florida Theater in downtown Jacksonville. In addition to the lectures, workshops and screenings from all over the world, Citrus Cel included the entries from Juiced, a 24-hour animation competition supported by the festival. Starting at 7pm on a Friday night and ending 7pm the next day, 20 teams from around the country created films based on the criteria mailed out just minutes before. Working towards an “imaginary friends” theme, Team Paper Pals -Michael Falk, Crystal Cawley and Brittany Wortham- took 2nd place with this stop motion animation short. Enjoy!

MORNING COFFEE – An animated short that I recently finished as the final project for my Advanced 2D course at The Art Institute of Jacksonville. This is also the first official “Uh, Actually Daddy” comic strip adapted to animation. After publishing two webcomics for almost two years, I decided to tell my stories as an animator instead and returned to school to learn the craft. You can view the original comic strip (and see how the artwork has evolved) here:

The Best Part of Wakin’ Up

This particular short was sketched out completely on bond on my animation disc (my personal preference for starting all of my animation work), scanned into Photoshop for cleanup and then imported into Toon Boom Animate Pro for the final work. The audio was worked in Adobe Audition, while the titles were completed and added in Adobe Premier.

Aside from my own voice as the father, my ten year old son lends his own vocal talents to this production. I think he’s a natural…

A PIRATE WALKS INTO A BAR… – An animated short created for an advanced 2D class where the project focus was audio lip-sync. The audio is my 10 year old son, Connor, telling his favorite pirate joke. This traditional animation was completely laid out on a lightboard, cleaned up in Photoshop and then finished in Toon Boom Animate.

ROPE TOSS – An animated rotoscope short completed in Photoshop. The original video is of my son Connor, playing with Cheese -one of our Golden Labs- and was shot on my iPhone 4S. I used a watercolor brush set for the digital ink & paint.
